"y" knot

Common uses: Creating a pair of footloops for ascending. Works especially well with a 11' canyon cordelette. Also excellent for creating a double strand bight when added strength is needed, or for creating two independently clippable loops from one knot, so that they can be clipped to separate protection as backup.

Fig. 1. Grasp about 3' of doubled rope/cord/webbing. Twist as if you were going to tie a figure eight on a bight.

Pull a doubled bight of the doubled cord through the loop as shown.

Fig. 2. Thread the doubled bights of rope through the single bight as shown. Pull on the doubled bights and fold the single bight around the knot until it runs snug against the rest of the knot. This sounds confusing but will make sense when you practice.

Fig. 3. Dress the knot by pulling tightly on the footloop bights and the rest of the rope. Adjust the size of the footloops until your feet can fit in them comfortably without falling out too easily.
