thigh belay

Purpose: To apply pressure to the thigh of a team member to allow them to slowly descend a steep chute or ramp.

Application:
Useful at short drops that have no holds to allow a safe downclimb, where a jump could cause injury.

Step 1 - Positioning:
The descender positions themselves so they are sitting in the chute or against the steep rock surface, prepared to slide down with their legs extended straight. The belayer positions their hands on the front of the thigh or thighs of the descender.

Step 2 - Slide & Press: The descender begins to slide as slowly as possible into the chute, while the belayer pushes the descender into the rock by applying force to the front of the thighs. This creates additional friction on the butt and back of the legs against the rock surface, allowing the descender to make a safe, slow, controlled slide to the ground.
