macrame & macrame w/ retreivable webbing

Purpose: For leaving as little webbing as possible on canyon anchors.

Application:
Useful at short (10'-50') drops where natural anchors exist.

Special Note 1: Macrame techniques are shown here with bolts for clarity only. Macrame use is not appropriate or useful with bolted anchors; they specifically complement natural anchor techniques.

Step 1 - Rigging the webbing:
Wrap your webbing around your anchor as shown.

Step 2 - Do this: Instructions

Step 3 - Thread the rope: Insert one end of the rope through the pull side of the webbing and pull through enough rope to reach the bottom of your rappel.

Step 4- Thread the bight: Once you have enough rope on both ends to reach the ground, pull a bight of rope at this point through the bight of the webbing anchor.

Step 5- Tie the Macrame: Begin by pulling a strand of rope from below the the threaded side, and pulling that bight through the bight you previously pulled through the webbing. Cinch down on the bight by pulling the opposite strand.

Step 6- Tie the Macrame, cont. See diagram.

Step 7- Finish the Macrame: Continue pulling & cinching bights of rope until you have at least 5 bights in the Macrame chain. Clip the final bight off with a locking carabiner to the webbing anchor.

Note: Only the last person should be rappelling down on the Macrame. Initial descenders should be able to rappel on a double line system (clip the strands of webbing together with a locking carabiner and run the rope through a rapide, for instance).

Step 8- Retreiving the Macrame: The final descender should unclip the safety carabiner and rappel down on the rappel strand (Make CERTAIN you are rappeling on the rappel strand). Once on the ground, pull on the pull strand, until you feel it "pop;" then pull on the opposite strand until you feel it release as well. Continue pulling on the alternate strands until all hitches have released.

Step 9- Retreiving the webbing: Now that all hitches have released, you should be able to pull on both strands of rope to pull down your rope along with the rigging webbing.

Step 10- Retreiving your rope when webbing catches: Should your webbing catch, for some reason, you should still be able to retreive your rope by pulling on one end until it pulls completely through the webbing anchor.

Step 11- Practice!: Practice using this system at home or at your local crag before attempting in a canyon. Remember, Macrame systems are for use around natural anchors like trees and boulders, not for retreiving webbing from bolted anchors.
