Purpose: An inline knot for tying into the middle of a rope.

Application:
Used in situations where the strands exiting the knot are being pulled in opposite directions. For situations where both exiting strands will be tensioned in the same direction, use Figure Eight on a Bight.

Compared to the Figure Eight on a Bight, the Buttefly is easier to untie and uses less rope.

The butterfly is handy for tying into the middle of a belay line, tensioning guide lines, and for several advanced pull cord techniques.
